TLM064: Co-Op – North of Bloor

Purchase now at:

Featured Artists: Co-Op, Todd Bodine, Santini & Tellez

It’s been over a year since Co-Op’s last release for Thoughtless – 2010′s acclaimed Peace By Piece – so it’s no surprise their overdue follow-up arrives with much anticipation. Refining their fluid yet ephemeral sound through numerous live sets in their hometown of Toronto, Oreste Camarra and Karim Sultan present an evolved vision of their uniquely crafted deep house music. The title track opens with subtle yet tension-building strings before dropping the bouncing analog bass line that pushes forward through lush yet restrained layers of Sultan’s evocative keys. One of our favorite Berlin producers, Todd Bodine, arrives on Thoughtless with a percussion-driven rework that amplifies dub elements of the original while achieving a sense of inescapable momentum through bulbous sub-sonics and clever effects. Fellow Toronto duo Santini & Tellez turn in a breezy summer remix perfect for open air moments, exclusively available on Juno Download. “To Life” comes in two flavors: the Past Dub, which features a more raw arrangement, and the Future Dub, which follows a more deliberate pace to arrive at the same resonant structure composed of hypnotic rhodes, melodic bleeps and signature Co-Op bass. Finally, “Machines of Loving Grace” illustrates the delicate balance between raw emotion, physical impulse and technological precision that defines their sound: plaintive synth melodies weave in and around playful drum work, intertwining with modulating bass tones and intermittent chimes to create a whole far greater than the proverbial sum. With effective arrangements and careful sound design throughout, Co-Op has delivered a stunning work that can only be the result of the boundless love they pour into what they do…
